The nominations for the 2020 Academy Awards have been released this morning, with PARASITE, MARRIAGE STORY and THE NEIGHBORS' WINDOW all receiving nods for the U.S. film industry’s highest honors.

An indie maverick in a field packed with blockbuster films from established studios and streaming platforms, NEON is poised to have an exciting night. Two of the upstart distributor’s films PARASITE and HONEYLAND are up for awards, with PARASITE making history as the first South Korean film to be nominated for six, including Best International Feature Film, Film Editing, Best Original Screenplay, Production Design, Best Director and Best Picture. A standout at last year’s Sundance Film Festival, HONEYLAND follows a middle-aged beekeeper in the foothills of Macedonia whose way of life is thrown into flux after her neighbors start tending to hives of their own. HONEYLAND is currently nominated for Best Documentary and Best International Feature Film, another unprecedented feat.

Long vetted as a potential Oscars favorite, Noah Bambauch’s MARRIAGE STORY received six nominations, including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, and Original Score. Actors Scarlett Johansson, Adam Driver, and Laura Dern, all picked up nods for their performances in the film, being nominated for Best Actress, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress respectively.

THE NEIGHBORS' WINDOW, a short by Woodstock Film Festival alumni Marshall Curry about a frustrated housewife who observes the lives of her young couple across the street has been nominated for Best Live Action Short. You can watch the film for free on Vimeo as a Staff Pick. THE NEIGHBORS’ WINDOW is the Marshall’s first foray into narrative work. Previously he was nominated for an Oscar for his documentary films A NIGHT AT THE GARDEN, IF A TREE FALLS: A STORY OF THE EARTH LIBERATION FRONT, and STREET FIGHT.

“I’ve always thought of myself as a documentary filmmaker so I was nervous to leap off the cliff and try writing and directing fiction. But I had an amazing team of collaborators  – a brilliant cast and crew – and it’s a huge thrill for the film to receive this attention”, said Curry.

The 92nd Academy Awards will air live Sunday February 9th on ABC. To celebrate, the Woodstock Film Festival will be hosting an Oscars viewing party at Rough Draft in Kingston, NY. Stay tuned for event updates through our social media and mailing list.
