Legendary promoter of the iconic 1969 Woodstock concert, longtime member of the festival advisory board and close friend, Michael Lang is finally fulfilling his dream of adapting THE MASTER AND MARGARITA, the classic satirical novel by noted Russian author Mikhail Bulgakov.
Lang has owned the films rights for over 25 years, after traveling to Moscow and making a deal for them in 1995. The creative team assembled for the project includes Baz Luhrmann (MOULIN ROUGE!, THE GREAT GATSBY) Svetlana Migunova-Dali (LEGEND NO. 17), Grace Loh (HOT TUB TIME MACHINE, WAR, INC.) and Natalia Rogal, producing. Lang, Nevin Shalit, Andrew Fourman, Ellen Goldsmith Vein (THE MAZE RUNNER, THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES), and Lindsay Williams (THE MAZE RUNNER, NO GOOD DEED) will be the executive producers.
“This has been a long time coming for me,” said Michael.
“I first read the novel in 1990 and fell on love with it. It’s taken all this time to have the right director and producing team come together, but worth the wait”.
Censored at the time of its publication in the USSR, THE MASTER AND MARGARITA is a biting critique of the Soviet state’s repression of social and religious liberties. Production may begin in Moscow in 2021.
