2021 Golden Globes: NOMADLAND, THE QUEEN'S GAMBIT Pick Up Wins

The 78th annual Golden Globes were held last night on NBC via bicoastal telecast, with powerhouse comedic duo Tina Fey and Amy Poehler as co-hosts.

Chloé Zhao’s NOMADLAND continues to build momentum with Zhao making history as the second woman ever to win Best Director amidst a record number of female nominees for an award year. The film also won the award for Best Motion Picture - Drama, beating out David Fincher’s MANK, Emerald Fennell’s PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN, Aaron Sorkin’s THE TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO 7 and Florian Zeller’s THE FATHER, which was the 2020 Woodstock Film Festival Opening Night Film. Starring Academy Award-winner Frances McDormand as a transient van dweller unmoored by the Great Recession, NOMADLAND was the Closing Night Film at last year’s Woodstock Film Festival, where it won Best Narrative Feature.

Over in television, writer/director Scott Frank and Netflix’s smash hit THE QUEEN’S GAMBIT won the award for Best Limited Series, Anthology Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television, with lead Anya Taylor-Joy winning Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television. Series showrunner and WFF advisory board member Bill Horberg accepted the award virtually. Based on the novel by Walter Tevis, THE QUEEN’S GAMBIT follows the accomplishments and pitfalls of a female chess prodigy in 1960s America as she struggles to balance her intellectual gifts with an addiction to pills and alcohol.

Another notable honoree was Mark Ruffalo, who won Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television for his role as identical twin brothers Dominick and Thomas Birdsey in the HBO miniseries I KNOW THIS MUCH TO BE TRUE, which was shot in the Hudson Valley. Ruffalo was a recipient of the “Meera Gandhi Giving Back Award” at the 2011 Woodstock Film Festival.
