SOUTHWOOD HOLOGRAPHICS AIR PROGRAM

Southwood Holographics is a holography center located in the Hudson Valley. We are focused on the production of holograms, education in holography, and the pursuit of new holographic technologies. We produce large and small scale holograms for artists and offer educational opportunities for individuals and groups through online, and hybrid, in-person workshops. We will also be relaunching our Artist In Residence program.

Southwood Holographics is one of the few fully operating holography studios (optics & darkroom) in the world that has been designed for creating all types of holographic images. The beautiful rural setting is optimal for the vibration free environment required for the process of creating both analogue and digital holograms as well.

Holography is a technique that uses laser light to create a 3D image of an object. Unlike regular photographs, holography captures the depth, shape, and texture of an object, so you can see different angles as you move around the hologram.

We have two studios that each contain several optical systems, a variety of gas and diode lasers, and set-ups for producing many different types of holograms through both analogue and digital recording processes. The first studio is where we conduct our online, hybrid, and in-person workshops for students, artists, and those interested in learning about the science and art of holography. The second studio is dedicated to exploring new and innovative ways to incorporate digital and alternative imaging formats like video, film, and photography into hybrid holography processes.

We have our Museum of Holography onsite, which houses a collection of close to three-hundred 120° and 360° holographic movies and stereograms. These were produced for commercial clients and artists, such as Salvador Dali. Southwood is also developing a Holography Archive & Library, which will house donated lab notebooks, unique production systems and equipment, and important papers from symposiums and conferences going back to the 1980’s.

We are proud to house vintage and one-of-a-kind equipment and systems at our facility, such as Lloyd Cross’s “Multiplex” system which was a groundbreaking discovery in holography and allowed for holograms to be recorded from moving images on film, including outdoor scenes.

Southwood Holographics is grateful and thrilled to be partnering with our friends and neighbors, The Woodstock Film Festival, to secure additional funding and support for our artist in residence program and for our ongoing research and development efforts in our labs so that we can offer new and innovative technology, equipment, and systems for our educational programming and public engagement efforts.

Once we receive the funding needed to relaunch our AIR program, we will announce an open call for applications. These applications will be reviewed by a panel of experts in art and science, and the AIR will be awarded to one artist who will spend two weeks at our facility producing their project with one of our holographic technicians and educators. Transportation, accommodations, meals, materials and production costs will be covered through the grant and funding we receive to support our AIR program.

TEAM

  • HART PERRY, Founder & Director
Hart Perry is a renowned filmmaker who was a cameraman for three documentaries that won Academy Awards. He is the founder & director of Southwood Holographics. Our facilities are located on Perry's historic estate along the Hudson River.

  • M MELISSA CRENSHAW, Lead Holographic Consultant
Melissa Crenshaw is a holographic artist and has taught workshops in the USA, Canada, and China. Her artworks are in a number of international collections. Melissa has designed and built several holography studios. She worked as a research holographer, specifically for Philips Lighting, where her team invented a patented holographic optical material (MesoOptics) for the lighting industry. Melissa is a lead consultant and educator for Southwood Holographics. Please see Crenshaw’s website for images and details.

  • DAVE BATTIN, Lead Holographic Technician
For nearly half a century, Dave Battin has accrued a wealth of experience, from building and repairing optical systems for Fairchild Weston Camera to manufacturing custom semiconductors. In addition to technical aspects, Dave has also taught and lectured at prestigious institutions like Ohio State University and SUNY Stonybrook University. His passion is mentoring the next generation of holographers. Currently, he is at the forefront of innovation, working on the implementation of "new" digital information into holography. Battin continues to push the boundaries of what's possible in the world of holography. Dave is a lead holographic technician and educator at Southwood Holographics.

  • CHRISSY STUART, Executive Director
Chrissy Stuart currently serves as Executive Director of Southwood Holographics and oversees the educational programming, production, and projects for the company and its holography labs. Chrissy is a transdisciplinary artist, holographer, educator, depth psychologist, and co-founder of Atrium Creative.
