FOOL
After getting dropped by his agent, William Direshore, a desperate young actor, has a chance encounter with a sorceress who offers him a soul-binding deal.
Late one rainy, dark night (this is how every horror movie starts, right?) I was speaking with my friend (Hunter Henry Hall), an actor, commiserating over the difficulties of pursuing the arts as a career. His mother came by, heard us talking, and remarked, “You two would sell your soul to the devil for a chance.” I thought to myself—I bet we would.
That week, I wrote FOOL in a mad fervor. I showed him the script and we decided to make it. Knowing Hunter’s love of Shakespeare, FOOL includes William Direshore in a flailing performance as Nick Bottom from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, clad in a degrading donkey mask. Shakespeare uses the mask to mark Bottom, well, as his name implies, an ass. Like Bottom is the FOOL in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Will is marked as the FOOL by the same, damned mask in our project. When William meets a sorcereress who promises him fame in exchange for his mortal soul, he eagerly agrees. William gets the girls, the limelight, the acclaim, and all seems well until the Devil shows up for his payment.
FOOL is a classic Faustian bargain with a Shakespearean twist, speaking to the desperation within every young artist's soul.
