Oscars 2021: Nominee Highlights
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced its official list of nominees for the 93rd annual Academy Awards this morning. Among those leading the pack were Florian Zeller’s THE FATHER and Chloé Zhao’s NOMADLAND, who are toe-to-toe in several major categories.
Anchored by Academy Award-winning heavyweights Olivia Coleman and Anthony Hopkins, THE FATHER centers on an elderly man trying to retain a grasp on reality as he begins to develop symptoms of dementia. Adapted from his book of the same name, Florian Zeller’s poignant drama received six nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Production Design, Best Editing, Best Picture as well as Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress for Hopkins and Coleman respectively. THE FATHER was the 2020 Woodstock Film Festival’s Opening Night Film and is now screening in theaters nationwide, courtesy of Sony Pictures Classics.
NOMADLAND continued its awards season blitz by netting six nominations in total, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Editing, Best Cinematography, and Best Actress. Starring multi Academy Award-winner Frances McDormand, NOMADLAND follows a transient van-dweller as she travels across the western United States after the Great Recession strips her of her livelihood and social life. It was the official Closing Night Film for the 2020 Woodstock Film Festival where it won Best Narrative Feature. The film is currently available to stream on Hulu and in theaters courtesy of Searchlight Pictures.
In the short film categories Will McCormack and Michael Govier’s IF ANYTHING HAPPENS I LOVE YOU was nominated for Best Animated Short. The film screened as part of the online shorts program for the 2020 Woodstock Film Festival and is now available to stream on Netflix.
